Thomas More University Chapel
Located at the heart of Thomas More College’s campus, the Mary, Seat of Wisdom Chapel serves as the spiritual centerpiece for students, faculty, and visitors. The project encompassed the development of a new chapel and bell tower, an outdoor amphitheater, and associated parking facilities.
Careful site planning was essential due to the chapel’s placement among existing buildings and roadways, as well as its proximity to a 24-inch underground gas transmission main and a sanitary sewer line. Prior to construction, all existing utilities were located and verified to ensure safe and efficient development. Close collaboration with the project architect helped determine the chapel’s orientation, allowing natural light to enter the space at specific times of day, enhancing the spiritual ambiance.
To support cost-effective stormwater management, the design incorporated an above-ground detention basin, discreetly screened by existing trees. This solution eliminated the need for more costly underground detention infrastructure.
Throughout the project, the design team participated in regular coordination meetings with stakeholders to address concerns and maintain alignment. Drawing on prior experience with the college and a strong understanding of regulatory requirements, the team delivered a thoughtful, functional, and inspiring space that reflects the institution’s values and vision.
