Cincinnati Children's Hospital Schubert Mental Health Center

Nationally, one in ten children has a disability associated with or due to mental health issues, and about one in five children experience a mental health disorder in a given year. The facility expansion helps Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, which is the only one of its kind in Ohio, provide the necessary mental and behavioral services to more than 2,100 children each year. This $105 million expansion replaces the existing facility. It offers private rooms for all inpatients and allows families to spend more time together. There is also dedicated space for group therapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy, and recreational therapy.

Maintaining operation of the site and facility during its expansion was an important element of Bayer Becker’s design. To make way for the expansion, existing parking had to be removed, so temporary parking areas were included in the design to accommodate users during construction. In addition, design included the modification of an existing detention basin as well as additional underground detention to assist with drainage. The project features various grade changes throughout, so Bayer Becker worked to minimize the amount of fill material needed to be brought in to assist with grading.
