Project Highlight

Bayer Becker provided design services for Sycamore Township’s fire house, which was the first LEED Certified gold fire house east of the Rockies. The fire house, which also includes a community center, occupies a portion of an 18 acre site that includes a park and multiple athletic fields. The fire house and adjacent park share parking so design for the fire house involved coordination with both Sycamore Township as well as engineering consultants for the adjacent areas of the park.

Bayer Becker’s design for the fire house portion of the project featured a tight location, bounded by roadways, parking and athletic fields. In addition to the building itself, the site had to accommodate large driveways necessary for the emergency vehicles to make large wide turns. The storm water design for the fire house was also an issue. The original design called for a connection to a limited capacity storm sewer system that was insufficient for the fire house’s demands. Bayer Becker’s design split the storm water between the fire house and adjacent park, which allowed for service to meet the fire house’s demand as well as reduce the overall flow to the adjacent park. Bayer Becker’s design for the storm water helped contribute to the project’s LEED certification. Bayer Becker’s past experience with both municipal and sustainable design were key factors to delivering a quality project to Sycamore Township. The ability to tie the fire house’s design to the adjacent park was another example of Bayer Becker’s ability to work not only with municipalities, but with other consultants to deliver great projects for the community.
